Welcome to The Literacy Teacher’s Life Podcast!

Today is the launch of the podcast, The Literacy Teacher’s Life! I hope you enjoy the first three episodes. In the first episode, I discuss the term “literacy” and it’s many meanings. Traditionally, literacy is viewed as a set of skills that are typically taught in school and learned by students in order to read and write. Some of these skills include - identifying the main idea and supporting details when reading a short passage, writing a short essay with details in each paragraph, or completing generic vocabulary and spelling worksheets. Each of these skills is thought to have a positive effect on a student’s abilities. In this episode, I expand on this definition to include the meaning that is made and the environment or the context where reading and writing happens. I give a few examples from my own teaching experiences about how this view of literacy looks in practice.

In the Spotlight Segment, I share children’s books that focus on reading and writing. One of my favorite books about how we read our worlds is The Three Pigs by David Weisner. I like to end of a positive note – so in this episode, I share the benefits of using comprehension cubes and story wands.

I do hope you enjoy the podcast! Click here for the link to the episode.
