LTL Podcast Episode 48: Incorporating Shared Reading into Classroom Instruction

Happy Halloween! And, a new podcast episode!

Happy Halloween!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Halloween. I am heading over to see my kids in their annual Halloween parade at school. I love seeing all of the costumes, particularly the costumes that the grade level teams select to wear.

There’s a new podcast episode today and it is all about Shared Reading. Shared reading is a teaching practice that includes choral reading, echo reading, and paired reading. This practice supports students’ reading fluency and comprehension as well as allows them to see the phonics and word work that you are teaching.

There have been changes to how shared reading is implemented since the implementation of Science of Reading. There is much more explicit instruction connected to shared reading and teachers give much more feedback now than before.

This is also a way of reading to kids that can be implemented at home. So, parents - if your child is assigned to “read for 20 minutes” each night - you can read together with your child - where you both read the text at the same time or you can have your child repeat a few of the sentences that you just read back to you. This way, your child is reading the text, but she has your support.

I hope you will give this episode a listen! And, Happy Trick-or-Treating!
